Park Martian

Park Martian is a self-initiated community campaign built during early COVID-19, when families needed safe reasons to go outside. Parks were socially distant, free, and underused. Developed with the town's Parks and Recreation Department, the project turns local green spaces into active experiences through hidden illustrated posters that give families a reason to walk, explore, and discover together.

The character draws from War of the Worlds and its historical ties to the town, reframing a classic sci-fi narrative into something playful and family friendly. The space theme was a strategic choice to spark curiosity about space exploration and build community momentum toward the town's application to NASA's Moon Tree Program. The application was selected, resulting in the planting of an Artemis I Moon Tree celebrated with a town-wide drone show.

The campaign is built as a system, not a single deliverable. Illustrated posters hidden across four parks drive exploration. The Park Martian Explorers Manual gives families a tactile way to engage before, during, and after each visit through backstory, coloring pages, a maze, and a sticker sheet. Every piece connects back to the same goal: getting families moving through their parks.

During COVID-19, the character wore a mask, letting the work reflect the moment and reinforce public health awareness without ever feeling like a PSA.
